Christmas in Columbia, 2011

With the weather forecast predicting a perfect early winter day, Saturday, December 3 will be a great opportunity for Adair County residents and visitors to welcome in the Christmas season. The theme this year is “Christmas Spirit.” In addition to many of the traditional events and activities there will several new events scheduled to make the weekend special for everyone – young and old.

The weekend will begin Friday evening, December 2 with a winter band concert by the Lindsey Wilson band under the direction of former Adair County High School band director Tim Allen. The concert will be held at 7:00 p.m. CT in the Biggers Sports Center and is free and open to the public. This is a fun way for the whole family to get into the spirit of Christmas.

Saturday’s activities will kick off with the traditional Rotary breakfast from 6:30–10:00 in the Fellowship Hall of the Columbia Baptist Church. The cost is $5.00/person. Where else can you get an all-you-can-eat breakfast for such a reasonable price?

If you’re into arts and crafts, you might check out the Hearts Image Studio and Gallery open house from 10:00-4:00. The studio is located at 980 G. Taylor Rd.

For those who like to shop, the Adair Heritage Association with the support of the Fiscal Court will re-open the courthouse to draw shoppers and history buffs to the square during the day. In addition to many stores having special Christmas in Columbia sales, the Adair Heritage Association will have tables and booths set up in the courthouse with different one-of-a- kind items for sale. Also, during the day, members of the Adair Heritage Association will be dressed in period costumes. Here’s your chance to enjoy some old fashioned Christmas spirit while you shop for that special gift.

Families with children might want to check out the activities and events at the Christmas Carnival in the Holloway Health and Wellness Center on the Lindsey Wilson College campus from 1:00-4:00. Kids will have the opportunity to make Christmas crafts with the Adair County 4-H group, decorate Christmas cookies, run and jump on inflatables, and hear Christmas stories. Santa will arrive at 2:00 to talk with kids about what they want for Christmas. While the children play, adults can check out the arts and crafts booths that will be set up and listen to live and recorded Christmas music.

For those who want to relive an old fashioned Christmas, there will be horse drawn carriage rides on the square from 3:00 p.m. until the start of the parade. What better way to get in the spirit of Christmas and prepare for the parade than to see the houses and buildings around the square decorated for the holidays than while riding in an open carriage.

The annual Christmas in Columbia parade will start at 6:00 and follow the usual route down Jamestown Street, around the courthouse square, and then down Burkesville Street to the Sav-A-Lot parking lot. Be sure to get your spot early to get a great view of the parade. The Grand Marshal this year is Mike Meyer, father of Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, Dakota Meyer. In a change from the past, Mr. Meyer’s car will stop in front of the courthouse long enough for him to light the Christmas tree.

The weekend will conclude on Sunday with several more activities. If you missed the Hearts Image open house on Saturday you can stop in anytime Sunday from 11:00-4:00. In the afternoon from 1:00-4:00 the annual Columbia Woman’s Club Home Tour will take place. This is your opportunity to see several of the unique homes in Columbia decorated for the holidays. Tickets are $5.00. You can purchase them from any Columbia Woman’s Club member, by calling 270-384-3552 or tickets are available at the Chamber of Commerce office. 2-1 Burkesville Street.

The weekend concludes with two performances of “The Christmas Prodigal” by the members of Antioch United Methodist Church. Performances are scheduled at 2:00 and 6:00.

There’s something for everyone during the weekend. This is your opportunity to get into the Christmas spirit and see first hand how Columbia and Adair County welcome in the holidays. Be sure to check out the weekend schedule to make sure you don’t miss out on the fun.
